I wouldn't peg it as something that only Super Metroid experts could handle but it definitely has its frustrating moments. The level design is ace, keeping the smooth progression and great atmosphere of the original. Super Metroid Redesign has a massive map that revolutionized what hackers previously thought possible. Drewseph, the creator, described his goal as "turning a 30-minute adventure into a two-hour one." That's pretty much what he did. Super Metroid Redesign is probably the mother of all hacks. You'll get lost a few times but you won't get frustrated. I don't want to imply that Stardust is super easy but it is very enjoyable and doesn't offer much headache. You'll gain items in a blink of an eye and it gives the hack a very fun feel. In fact, the pacing and progression is great. There are many paths to go but it never feels overwhelming because any which way you go is sure to be filled with lots of goodies. The designer did not design for any items to be gotten before the others (except for the first few). The coolest thing about Stardust is the total non-linearity. Exploration is easy, smooth, and not frustrating at all. It's not too easy (it's slightly harder than the original Super Metroid) and not too hard. It's very very fun and does not require many advanced techniques. The reason I recommend you play Stardust first is because it's the easiest hack to get into and it does a great job of warming you up for the tougher and better hacks. NOTICE: I recommend you play this hack first!

BTW the names of each hack are hotlinked to the download link. I'll be adding descriptions of each hack along with the techniques needed to beat the hack and any other miscellanous information that I decide to include for whatever reason. However, there are a lot of ROM hacks and it can be hard to separate the cream of the crop from the ones that aren't so good and that is what this thread will (hopefully) do. Some ROM hacks edit the game room by room while others rearrange the whole map and add new abilities. For those who can't get enough and want to experience the game in a whole new way, then ROM hacks are great. Many people have mastered it, memorized, etc and still they can't get enough Super Metroid. It's one of the greatest games of all time and many people will argue that it is THE greatest game of all time. Thanks to a very good friend of mine for the banner!Įveryone loves Super Metroid.
